AltaVista Search Engine
The AltaVista search engine starts by spidering your entire site with its spider Scooter. Although lately Scooter hasn't been scooting too well.

Scooter may take up to three months to spider and index your entire site (if it is going to crawl your site at all). It normally spiders about 2-10 pages per site in any week. Sometimes Scooter needs a good swift kick to get it to index certain pages.

AltaVista is one of largest search engine on the net with over 285 million pages in its huge database (Sept 2000).

AltaVista was created out of a research project at Digital Equipment Corporations Research Laboratories in Palo Alto California USA. Recently a controlling interest was sold to CMGI. An IPO is planned for early 2000.

AltaVista again uses the Looksmart directory service, in adition to the ODP (Open Directory Project listed Sites).

It is the only search engine to index in multiple languages and multiple character sets with on-the-fly translation. It can determine the character set of a page even if a web author has failed to indicated it, which commonly happens. Although, Infoseeks new translation service is going to give Babel fish, a run for its money.
